In this WHO South Africa podcast, Mzansi Health Talks, we commemorate World Polio Day 2023 with a compelling conversation featuring Dr. Simangele Mthethwa, the National Professional Officer for Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) and Surveillance. 

World Polio Day is commemorated annually on 24 October, to raise awareness of the importance of polio vaccination to protect every child from polio, and to celebrate the many parents, professionals and volunteers whose contributions make polio eradication achievable. Polio is a life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus, which the World Health Assembly committed to eradicate. The theme for World Polio Day this year is "Make Polio History".

This discussion explores the progress and challenges in the fight against Polio, and explores WHO South Africa's preparedness efforts in the fight against polio.
